Audi A4 buyer guide
B6 → B9: TFSI oil consumption, multitronic, and 35/40 TDI decoding
Two headline checks on a used A4: the multitronic CVT on FWD automatics and B8-generation TFSI oil consumption. Both are verifiable before purchase. Built on the autopase.lv model reference dataset; sources at the bottom.
📐 Technical figures on this page come from the autopase.lv model reference dataset; verification sources are listed at the bottom.

⚠️ Known issues
- •Same multitronic caveat on FWD; 2.0 TDI (BPW/BRE) oil-pump drive is the known failure — ask whether the fix/inspection was done; cambelt interval discipline matters.
✅ Options to check
- •quattro, xenon, Bose; documented cambelt + water pump change.
B8
2007–2015facelift 2012Audi A4 (B8)
Engines and versions
| Version | Fuel | Power | Drive | Years |

| 3.0 TDI quattro (245 PS) | Diesel | 180 kW | AWD | 2011–2015 |
⚠️ Known issues
- •1.8/2.0 TFSI (EA888 gen 2) oil consumption is the big one — verify piston/ring work or measure consumption; early 2.0 TDI CR oil-pump/balance-shaft issue; multitronic until the end on FWD.
✅ Options to check
- •Oil top-up frequency, S tronic service records, B8.5 (2012+) LED DRL signature, EA189 recall status on 2.0 TDI.
B9
2015–2024facelift 2019Audi A4 (B9)
Engines and versions
| Version | Fuel | Power | Drive | Years |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1.4 TFSI | Petrol | 110 kW | FWD | 2015–2019 |
| 2.0 TFSI (190 PS) | Petrol | 140 kW | FWD | 2015–2019 |
| 45 TFSI quattro | Petrol | 195 kW | AWD | 2019–2024 |
| 2.0 TDI (150 PS) | Diesel | 110 kW | FWD | 2015–2019 |
| 2.0 TDI (190 PS) | Diesel | 140 kW | FWD | 2015–2019 |
| 35 TDI | Diesel | 120 kW | FWD | 2019–2024 |
| 40 TDI | Diesel | 140 kW | FWD | 2019–2024 |
| 50 TDI quattro | Diesel | 210 kW | AWD | 2019–2024 |
⚠️ Known issues
- •Solid overall; EA288 2.0 TDI is mature. S tronic (DL382) wants its ~60k km oil service — check the records.
✅ Options to check
- •Virtual cockpit, Matrix LED, ACC; many imports are base trims — equipment varies a lot.
🔎 How to identify the real version
From the B9 facelift (2019+) Audi numbers mean power class: 35 TDI is a 2.0 diesel with 120 kW, 40 TDI is 140 kW. On older generations the registration-certificate kW defines the version.
How to verify
- →B9: 35 TDI = 120 kW, 40 TDI = 140 kW, 45 TFSI = 195 kW, 50 TDI = 210 kW.
- →B8: the 2.0 TDI came as 100, 105 and 130 kW — "177 hp" in a listing means the 130 kW version.
What badge fakery looks like
- ⚠S line stickers and grille do not make an S4; a "quattro" badge on a FWD car — verify the drivetrain in documents.
Options that move the price
- •On B8 TFSI the oil-consumption history matters more than any option; check virtual cockpit / Matrix LED via VIN.
👉 Next step: Before calling: establish the gearbox type and (on B8 TFSI) the oil top-up frequency. If the seller knows neither, that is a signal.
