Audi A6 buyer guide
C5 → C8: the multitronic trap, engine choice and 40/45/50 TDI decoding
On a used A6 the gearbox choice matters more than the engine: multitronic CVT on FWD automatics is the headline risk across three generations. This guide is built on the autopase.lv model reference dataset; sources at the bottom.
📐 Technical figures on this page come from the autopase.lv model reference dataset; verification sources are listed at the bottom.

|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1.8 | Petrol | 92 kW | FWD | whole run |
| 1.8 T | Petrol | 110 kW | FWD | whole run |
| 2.4 | Petrol | 121 kW | FWD | whole run |
| 2.8 | Petrol | 142 kW | FWD | 1997–2001 |

| 2.5 TDI quattro | Diesel | 132 kW | AWD | whole run |
⚠️ Known issues
- •Multitronic CVT on FWD automatics is the deal-breaker — budget for it or pick manual/tiptronic quattro; 2.5 TDI V6 camshaft wear is the other classic.
✅ Options to check
- •Gearbox type first, then xenon and heated seats; allroad air-suspension condition.

| 3.0 TDI quattro (240 PS) | Diesel | 176 kW | AWD | 2008–2011 |
⚠️ Known issues
- •Multitronic again on FWD; 2.0 TDI pump-düse units want injector history; MMI 2G electronics age. quattro + tiptronic is the safe combination.
✅ Options to check
- •Working MMI and parking sensors, DPF state on diesels, allroad air suspension.
C7
2011–2018facelift 2014Audi A6 (C7)

| 3.0 TFSI quattro | Petrol | 228 kW | AWD | 2011–2014 |
| 2.0 TDI | Diesel | 130 kW | FWD | whole run |
| 2.0 TDI ultra | Diesel | 140 kW | FWD | 2014–2018 |
| 3.0 TDI | Diesel | 150 kW | FWD | whole run |
| 3.0 TDI quattro | Diesel | 180 kW | AWD | 2011–2014 |
| 3.0 TDI quattro (272 PS) | Diesel | 200 kW | AWD | 2014–2018 |
| 3.0 TDI biturbo quattro | Diesel | 235 kW | AWD | whole run |
⚠️ Known issues
- •Multitronic stayed on FWD cars until 2014 — prefer S tronic/tiptronic; 3.0 TDI timing chains sit at the rear; confirm the EA189 emissions recall on 2011–2015 2.0 TDI.
✅ Options to check
- •Matrix LED (post-2014), air suspension, BOSE; allroad air struts and level sensors.
C8
2018–2025facelift 2023Audi A6 (C8)
Engines and versions
| Version | Fuel | Power | Battery | Drive | Years |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 40 TDI | Diesel | 150 kW | — | FWD | whole run |
| 45 TDI quattro | Diesel | 170 kW | — | AWD | 2018–2023 |
| 50 TDI quattro | Diesel | 210 kW | — | AWD | whole run |
| 45 TFSI | Petrol | 180 kW | — | FWD | whole run |
| 55 TFSI quattro | Petrol | 250 kW | — | AWD | whole run |
| 50 TFSI e quattro (14.1 kWh) | Plug-in hybrid | 220 kW | 14.1 kWh | AWD | 2019–2021 |
| 50 TFSI e quattro (17.9 kWh) | Plug-in hybrid | 220 kW | 17.9 kWh | AWD | 2021–2025 |
| 55 TFSI e quattro (14.1 kWh) | Plug-in hybrid | 270 kW | 14.1 kWh | AWD | 2019–2021 |
| 55 TFSI e quattro (17.9 kWh) | Plug-in hybrid | 270 kW | 17.9 kWh | AWD | 2021–2023 |
⚠️ Known issues
- •Early cars logged 48V mild-hybrid starter-generator faults; otherwise a young, generally solid fleet — check software/recall status.
✅ Options to check
- •HD Matrix LED, air suspension, rear-axle steering; on TFSI e ask for a battery capacity report.
🔎 How to identify the real version
Since the C8 (2018) Audi numbers mean power class, not displacement: a 40 TDI is a 2.0 diesel with 150 kW, a 50 TDI a 3.0 with 210 kW. On older generations the registration-certificate kW defines the version.
How to verify
- →C8: match "40/45/50/55" to the table (40 TDI 150 kW, 45 TDI 170 kW, 50 TDI 210 kW, 55 TFSI 250 kW).
- →C7 and older: match the certificate kW to the table; check the gearbox type (multitronic / S tronic / tiptronic) via service data or VIN.
What badge fakery looks like
- ⚠A "3.0 TDI quattro" badge on a FWD 2.0 TDI — verify the drivetrain in documents; aftermarket S line kits are common.
Options that move the price
- •Air suspension (check it holds level overnight), Matrix LED, BOSE, quattro — verify via VIN option codes and documents.
👉 Next step: Before calling: establish the gearbox type. An unspecified "automatic" on an A6 always deserves the question — is it multitronic?
🔋 Real range vs WLTP
The electrified A6 is the C8 TFSI e plug-in hybrid (50 TFSI e 220 kW, 55 TFSI e 270 kW; 14.1 kWh battery, 17.9 kWh from 2021). WLTP electric range is a lab figure — real winter range is noticeably lower.
- ⚡Ask for a written battery capacity report and a full-charge photo with predicted range.
- ⚡Confirm the battery size by year (14.1 kWh pre-2021, 17.9 kWh after) and that charging cables are included.
👉 Next step: Request the battery capacity report in writing before viewing.
