Cars from Sweden: where to look and what import costs (2026)

Sweden is in the EU, so a car from there comes in without customs duty or an import declaration in 2026. Two Latvian costs can be named up front: €206 for CSDD registration with the first roadworthiness test, and €100–180 for the first year of OCTA. The third cost is the road, and it depends on the route — no carrier publishes a price for this direction, so this page states none and sends you to the calculator.

Where the Swedish ads are

Almost every Swedish car ad in 2026 sits on one of four sites, and only one of them publishes an independent report for each car: Kvd tests a car on more than 170 points and puts the result, photos included, into the listing (kvd.se, read 2026-09-21).

Swedish listing vocabulary

The first word matters most: Swedish mileage is written in "mil", and one mil is 10 km.

How the Swedish market differs from Germany

In 2025, 63.2% of all new passenger cars registered in Sweden were rechargeable — 36.5% battery-electric and 26.7% plug-in hybrid, out of 272,987 new cars (Mobility Sweden, published 2026-01-02). Three to five years later those cars reach the used market, which is why the choice of hybrids and EVs there beats Germany, still a petrol and diesel market.

Mileage runs lower: the average Swedish car covered 1,243 mil in 2025 — 12,430 km (Trafikanalys, published 2026-04-17), so 60,000–65,000 km on a five-year-old car is normal. Winter tyres are mandatory from 1 December to 31 March in winter road conditions, minimum tread 3 mm (Transportstyrelsen), so a second set of wheels often comes along. Sweden also salts roughly a quarter of its state roads (Trafikverket) — judge the car from underneath: sills, wheel arches, brake pipes, subframes.

Paperwork differs too: the registration certificate comes in two parts, and export needs del 2 from the seller. Mileage is recorded at every inspection and is publicly visible, so an odometer is harder to roll back than in Germany, where no such public record exists.

For comparison, the German direction has published figures: a car carrier costs €550–800, and the total on top of the car's price is €856–1186 (re-measured 2026-09-12). Sweden has no such published band, and carrying the German number over to another route would be the same as inventing it.

What to check before you pay

A Swedish car can be checked for free, without registering, before you travel: the Transportstyrelsen service returns vehicle data, inspection records, tax and technical details for a registration number, and a short version arrives by SMS to 71640 (read 2026-09-21).

1Enter the plate at Transportstyrelsen and compare the odometer reading in the inspection records with the ad — 12,000 mil is 120,000 km.
2Check the inspection rhythm: first within 36 months of entering service, second 24 months later, then every 14 months (Bilprovningen). A gap needs explaining.
3Ask for both parts of the registration certificate — without del 2 the car cannot be deregistered for export.

Registering the car at CSDD

A vehicle that will be used on the road must be registered within 5 days of being brought into Latvia (csdd.lv, read 2026-09-21), and with the first roadworthiness test that costs €206.

It breaks down as: natural-resources tax €110, first registration with certificate and two plates €41.88, VIN/unit-number comparison with the car present €19.25, first roadworthiness test €35. Bring the Swedish registration document and proof of ownership.

In Sweden the seller reports the car deregistered for export, and Transportstyrelsen asks for proof that it left — a copy of the Latvian registration certificate will do. OCTA must be in place before the car is driven here.
