How to choose a car under €10,000
1. Compare with the median of the model
The table gives the median price of each model. A car far cheaper than its model median deserves a second look: the reason may be mileage, damage or history.
2. A newer small car or an older premium one
This budget buys either a newer car with a smaller engine or an older premium car. Count more than the purchase price: insurance, tax and servicing differ a lot between the two.
3. Check the automatic gearbox
If you take an automatic, ask for the gearbox oil service records and drive it under load: jerking or a pause while shifting are bad signs.
4. A full service book is worth paying extra for
A car with a full service history and a single owner costs more but is easier to sell later. Compare at least five listings before you choose.
5. Get an independent inspection before you pay
A VIN check and diagnostics at an independent garage can reveal problems the seller does not know about or does not mention. It costs far less than the first big repair.
