How to choose a car under €5,000

  1. 1. Service history beats low mileage

At this price the odometer rarely tells the whole story. Ask for the service book or invoices, and compare the mileage with the wear on the seats, steering wheel and pedals.

  2. 2. Prefer simple engineering

For this money a proven petrol engine or a plain diesel with a manual gearbox is the safer pick. Complex turbo engines, robotised gearboxes and air suspension on an old car turn into expensive repairs.

  3. 3. Do not spend the whole budget on the purchase

A used car at this price almost always needs something: oil, brakes, tyres, the technical inspection. Count it together with the price, and buy a cheaper car rather than be left with no reserve.

  4. 4. Check for rust

Winter road salt in Latvia eats sills, wheel arches and the underbody. Look at them from below and on both sides; rust on load-bearing parts is a reason to walk away.

  5. 5. Check the paperwork and history before you pay

Run a VIN check, make sure the technical inspection is valid and nothing is pledged against the car, and compare the mileage with what the history shows.

Frequently asked questions

What can you buy for up to €5,000 in Latvia?

As of 4 October 2026, 8,257 used cars priced up to €5,000 are for sale in Latvia. The median asking price is €2,950; most are 2001–2012 model years. Another 332 are cars from Germany in the AutoPase showroom; their prices include delivery to Latvia. The most common models are Audi A4 (292), Audi A6 (252), Volvo V70 (203).

Can you buy a reliable car for under €5,000?

Yes, if you pick a proven model with a clear history. Start with the most common models in the table above: there are many listings of each, so you can compare prices and find the best offer.

What mileage is normal for a car under €5,000?

The table shows the average mileage of each model. If a car has far less than its model average, ask why: is there a service history, and does the mileage match the VIN check?

Diesel or petrol under €5,000?

An older diesel often comes with expensive repairs (particulate filter, turbo, fuel system), while a petrol engine is usually simpler. A diesel makes sense if you drive a lot and the service history is complete.
